4.50 tyre on a 6" rim is O.K if the rim itself would fit under the wheel arch without fouling as it will on my Rochdale Olympic without cutting away the arches. Cutting down and re-welding to the required width however is an option. Though an expensive one I agree.
I find myself in a similar situation to early 950 Turner owners of finding a suitable rim of the correct width that isn't 45+ years old and knackered. In my case 14" diameter not 15". I could go to 13" as a last resort.
An idea out of left field:- Dragster ET front rims available in 4" & 4.5" x 15". see link. Would it work? Studs & PCD would need to be altered to suit. Would they period enough looking?
