For those with BMC front suspension.
There seems to be a difference of opinion as to how to fit taper bearings. One view is that the spacer should be retained and shimmed so that the nut can be tightened to 45ft/lbs putting the stub axle under tension and the spacer under compression but keeping free movement of the wheel. This prevents failure of the stub axle.
The other opinion is that you do not need to. You use no spacer and tighten the nut to remove free play only.
What is the general experience? Does the axle in fact fail with no torque on the nut? What is the racing experience?
