As long as it is the right distance, it shouldn't be a problem. The longer it's on each day, the quicker it is likely to wear out.
I tend to set mine on a timer for 6-8 hours, which should be adequate exposure, and I use other lighting for seeing to get around.
My reasoning is that it's better to be consistent and to try to simulate winter day length than summer day length, in an attempt to regularize molting and avoid triggering reproductive behavior, but that's based on reasoning not any real data.
