In general, putting stuff in the water means you need to change the water even more often -- every few hours -- because it provides a medium for bacterial growth. Most vets advise not using supplements in the water unless directed to by a vet.
Also, adding something to the water could not possibly remove anything from the water. It could react with it and bind it up into a salt or other compound, but that compound is still going to be in the water.
Personally I'd go with a food-based additive if I felt I needed something (and if your bird eats pelleted food, you probably don't need to worry too much).
