Once a religion gets organized and a hierarchy gets put in place, any inconvenient ideas of the founder that interfere with business get buried or reinterpreted. You don't want the rich to think they won't go to heaven unless they give away all their property, you want them to think they're damned unless they pay for remission of their sins by giving it to the church.
Christianity has gone from harder for a rich man to enter heaven than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle to preachers now saying be a good Christian and the lord will see you prosper (with a corollary that you will know the faithful by their worldly success).
You can't say they didn't have to do some work for their money and power, though. Takes a fair amount of exegesis to jigger the camel and the lilies of the field into something you can sell to ruling elites or those who believe in capitalism and the Protestant work ethic.
