...have outages! I used satellite for work for years, and here is my experience.
It is painfully slow compared to cable, but it was my only option so better than nothing and it did work fine.
Make sure you get the max bandwidth you can if others are going to be sharing it with you. Don't allow the family to use it while you're working -- especially not streaming movies, etc. It eats up your bandwidth and then your service will slow you down even more.
Consider placement carefully and think about how tall those trees are going to get before having it installed.
Also, if you rely on it for work, you will need to have the dish put in a place where you can easily reach it to brush the snow off.
Wind plus rain or snow = a spotty connection. The owl who thought it was a good spot for resting on it also seemed to impact the speed - weird, huh?
It can and does work, you'll just need patience.
