My DH also only drinks "fizzy water". I bought a cheap brand at the 99c Store, but it was a lot of weight to haul into the house every week.
I got a machine, but a different brand (now out of business). He loved it. He even used flavor packets occasionally to make it grape. And I made orange soda quite often.
There was a sporting goods store by my house that refilled the canisters for just a few dollars. Then they closed and I could not find a place to refill. I know you can mail them in to be refilled, but that sounds expensive and even more trouble than going to the store! Someone recently told me their grocery store refills canisters, but I don't have the machine anymore so I didn't check it out.
If you can find a place to refill easily (such as a grocery store or sporting goods store) then I do highly recommend.
FYI - If you order from Walmart or Target you can have "water" delivered to your door (minimum purchase or yearly fee). Maybe Amazon also? That won't help as a Christmas present, but might make your shopping easier.
