We did $20 a year for nieces/nephews until they graduated from HS (when they got $200, and another $200 for college). Big family, so that was the best we could afford.

Now we have great nieces/nephews, but they are all too young for cash ... and really we won't see them except at family Christmas (if that ever happens again).

If you can afford it I can tell you that even grownups appreciate cash! And as they grow up you don't see them as often, so something at Christmas reminds them you love them. Of course, not just cash but a little gift or even a card does the same if your financials change.

DH's father gave his kids $50 a year as adults and when we married I got my own $50, which was a huge surprise and made me feel like part of the family.
