Dishwasher smell (sm)

My dishwasher smells when you open it, like standing water or something, but there is none. I have had it for about 8 years and never knew that there was a place that you are supposed to clean out at the bottom of the washer with residual food in it. My DIL just told me about this yesterday. Suggestions?
