I have two friends who do this. I thought it was barbaric at first, but

Put something of yours that has your scent on it inside the crate. Put the puppy in the crate after you make sure that it is fed and has gone out to do its business. Start out with short amounts of time. Leave the house for 15 minutes, then 30 minutes and on and on. It’ll take a couple weeks to acclimate the puppy to the crate, or kennel. They will know that it’s their safe place and that that is where they go for a rest. If the other dog doesn’t have a crate, put the puppy in a room without the other dog around. This is not mean. It is actually a loving way to keep your dog safe. I have no doubt others will disagree but this is how my two friends raised their puppies, who BTW are very well-adjusted, loving and friendly dogs.
