Naive w/o a cell phone. We need a GPS

DH and I do not have cell/smart phones, so if there is a huge traffic delay, we have no way to know. I usually just check the local traffic flow map on my PC and he calls me when he's leaving work to see if he needs to take an alternate route. I want to get him a GPS for his car but have no clue how to go about this. Should we have the car dealer install it? Would it go into the dash where the backup screen/radio is? Is it a separate device?

I can't believe I can edit brain surgeries but do not know about these everyday tech things. lol

Would welcome any suggestions.
