there is no logic to using "spitting image" to refer to an exact likeness. Spit and image does convey that. Substituting spitting image was simply a common mishearing. It's likely that by the next century someone will be arguing that per say is the correct modern form and per se is anachronistic and so forth and so on for all the commonly misheard words/terms now that few people actually read versus watching the video. :)
