Back in the the last century, agricultural extension home economists went to work trying to change the diet of the native population in the Southwest.
They were appalled at the sudden explosion in malnutrition and disease within the next few decades.
The reason? It turned out that that awful "inadequate" lime-ground corn tortillas and beans with tons of chilis diet they'd all been eating was actually completely balanced as well as dirt cheap. OTOH, an adequate version of the milk and meat Anglo diet the home ec folks insisted they needed was beyond their budget, and actually less healthy in any case.
Never overlook the folk wisdom behind diets that have sustained populations of limited means for centuries--they're always healthy as well as cheap.
