This is from a cookbook from SW North Dakota (German area), and it's easy to make, just a bit time consuming. It makes two cake pans full, one to eat right away and one to freeze.

1 large head of cabbage
2 lbs. ground beef
1/3 c. regular rice (raw)
1 small onion, grated or chopped
1 egg slightly beaten
1/3 c. cold water
2 tsp salt
pinch of pepper

2 onions, sliced
2 T. oil
28 oz tomato sauce
1/2 tsp each pepper and paprika
5 T. pancake syrup
2 tsp salt
2 T. sugar
2 T. lemon juice
1 c. water

Remove core from cabbage and soak head in boiling water until leaves can be loosened. Mix beef, rice, onion, egg, water, S&P. Roll meat mixture in cabbage leaves and place in sprayed cake pans.

To make sauce: Heat oil, brown onion till soft. Add tomato sauce, paprika, pepper, syrup, sugar, salt, lemon juice, and water. Bring to a boil.

Pour sauce over cabbage rolls and bake for about 1 hour, covered in 350-degree oven. Tastes better if refrigerated overnight & reheated slowly. Great served with mashed potatoes!
