She cooks her ham bone with lots of ham on it in a pot with boiling water for "a long time." (several hours)
After the ham is very tender and falling off the bone, she removes the bone, cutting up ham pieces and throwing them back in the pot.
Then she cuts up potatoes and throws them in until they are done.
The last 10-15 minutes of cooking time she will throw in the prepared string beans. She prefers fresh but has used frozen and canned in the past. Not really fond of canned, though. (I will attest the fresh are the best)
That's it. She said she does not add any seasonings. The flavor of the ham is enough.
She always made this with warmed up bread (Italian or French) in the oven.
