Old-fashioned Stack Cake

Cream together 3/4 c sugar, 1/4 c shortening. Add 1 egg and beat well. Stir in 1/4 c molasses. Sift together 1 c plain flour, 1/2 t. soda, 1 T baking powder, 1/4 t allspice, 1/4 t salt, 1/4 t nutmeg, and 1/2 t cinnamon. Add 1/2 c buttermilk. Then add flour mixture to molasses mixture.

Next, add enough flour to make dough stiff and easy to handle (about 2 cups). Knead on floured surface and divide in 5 portions. Pat each portion into 9" cake pain that has been greased well. Bake 10 minutes at 370 degrees. Cool.

Stack layers with the following hot mixture:
1 qt cooked dried applies (until mushy) then add 1 tsp each of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, 2 cups of sugar and 1/4 tsp salt.
