That could suggest past life, but I am wondering if the military doesn't symbolize belonging to something bigger than ourselves, albeit a bit regimented. I guess there would be a certain amount of regimentation in all such collectives. There is also a lot of security in the sense of belonging.

I dated an Air Force Captain in Alaska, and I was very impressed that even though he was retired, the base in Anchorage was like his home to command. Because of his rank, he had a lot of advantages when we went there.
