When Robert Jones first opened the site in 1994 he couldn’t have imagined that it would ever attract so many members and so much interest as it has generated. Sadly Robert passed away unexpectedly in 1918. he made us promise we would continue the running of the site in his name and uphold its good name this we promised to do. Colin and I don't have the expert knowledge in running the site but we will prod along as best we can to uphold its name. THE QUEEN’S REGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION

Patron: Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark

RHQ PWRR UPDATE 6-12 March

G1:

Commemorative:

Albuhera Service St Paul’s Cathedral Saturday 13 May 2023. This year’s Albuhera service will take place at St Paul’s Cathedral starting at 1030 hrs. This year (because of the Coronation) the event clashes with the Army v Navy rugby match; if you are not going to the rugby please try to support this event. Because the rebuild of the Middlesex Chapel is still in progress, the event will be held in the OBE Chapel in the Crypt (and it is a huge privilege to be allowed to do so). Given the regiment’s contribution to Op INTERFLEX and the training of Ukrainians the theme of the service will be one of peace.

For forward planning by those who live a long way from London and need to book hotels, the event will be held next year in the Middlesex Chapel (assuming the rebuild goes to plan) on Saturday 11 May.

Op TELIC 1 – 20th Anniversary. This month sees the 20th anniversary of Op TELIC 1. The National Army Museum is putting on a free event on 17 March to look at the preparations made for the invasion in 2003. One of the presenters is Lt Col Chris Parker MBE previous Chair of the PWRR Association. More detail can be found at the link below:

Bugler Support at Veterans’ Funerals. JSP 813 details the policy for veteran’s’ entitlement to a bugler to play the Last Post at their funeral at public expense. It has been re-written to expand the entitlement criteria which are now:

Completed pensionable service or:
Completed an operational tour.

The previous criteria were based on rank attained during service. Relatives of deceased should apply in the first instance through RHQ or regimental associations. Support is based on availability of buglers (who might not be from the PWRR). Whilst the Corps of Army Musicians will always try to support a funeral they don’t always have the capacity to do so.

Forces Connect App. Forces connect have introduced an app that helps signpost veterans to appropriate agencies when they need help and advice. RHQ has downloaded the app and will be using it to help the welfare desk identify other charities and organisations that might work with us to assist those in need. Details are in the screenshot below – do not be put off by reference to Surrey County Council when the app opens – it is applicable nationwide.

CCF Job Opportunity – Reading Blue Coat School. Reading Blue Coat School has a job opportunity for a Staff Instructor and Head of DOE. Details can be found in the attached word document.

Funeral of Ted Philips. The funeral of Ted Philips took place this week. This 106 year old veteran had served with the East Surrey Regiment in WW2; his funeral was supported by members of the veterans, serving members of the regiment and cadets (see attached photo). Colonel Tony Ward OBE DL has shared a summary of Ted’s military service that was read out at the funeral (attached).

In Memoriam:

WO2 (Bandmaster) Don Palrey. Don Palfrey died on 26 February from bone cancer that had been diagnosed a week before his death. Don enlisted into the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1956 before joining the 3rd Battalion The Queen’s Regiment and stayed in the regiment until 1968 when he transferred to the Band of the Scots Guards. In 1972 he moved to Australia and joined the Australian Army Band Corps before finishing his service as WO2 (Bandmaster) at the Australian Defence Force Academy, the equivalent of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Corporal Jim Ferry. Jim Ferry had been battling cancer for a year when he died on 3 March. He originally joined 4th Battalion The Queen’s Regiment (Middlesex) in 1968 but moved to 1st Battalion The Queen’s Regiment when the 4th Battalion was disbanded (and all battalions lost their county titles). Jim was living in Esperance, Western Australia and leaves two sons and three grandchildren.

Lance Corporal Colin Granger. Colin Granger served with 1st Battalion The Queen’s Regiment. He died on 2 March from a cancer that had been identified in January.

Miscellaneous:

PWRR & Queen’s Regiment Museum. The museum received a visit from firefighters in Dover this week – they toured the museum and the museum’s stores, and received a briefing from the Curator about the museum’s salvage plan in case of an emergency. A salvage drill will be conducted in the near future to rehearse the museum’s contingency planning (note this was a lesson learned after the Clandon House fire that destroyed much of the Surrey Infantry Museum collection).

The Chindits in Burma - Operation THURSDAY. On 22 March Lt Col Peter Swanson MBE will be delivering a lecture that focuses on the part played by 2nd Battalion The Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey) during Operation THURSDAY. The lecture will take place in the Farnham Army Reserve Centre and tickets cost £12.50. More detail can be found in the attached flyer and lecture lunch return.
