: blimey tony you were lucky there tony.1984 mcrory park west belfast b company .6 platoon were due to go out on a mobile patrol to springfield road police station.I was meant to be topcover on one of the landrovers. I then got told transport was arriving to take me and a couple of others to go to 1 queens in omagh. The reason for going to 1 queens was to do some drill because we were going to do the freedom of Belfast march with soldiers from the other 2 battalions.Anyway the soldier who replaced me on the topcover of the landrover ended up with missing teeth and a broken nose. What had happened was the bolt that was holding the top cover hatch down had broken,as they were going along the road and the hatch had come up and smashed the guy in the face .Ialways thought that would of been me if i hadent had gone to omagh. There must of been quite a few near misses over the years
Similar experience
We were spearhead battalion in tidworth. And we’re going to londonderry For motorman.
The afternoon before leaving we had time fir a bit of inter Pl. football . I fractured my ankle so 6 pl went without Pl Sgt.
Piggery ridge was where 6pl went and had no Pl Sgt so came under command of a guards platoon Sgt.
He got a bullet in the neck.
Guess I had a lucky fracture
