Actually no, Col Rod, and I'm quite sure of that: at that time you were enlisted in the Home Counties Brigade, but not into any of the 4 regiments until after six weeks of training. That decision was left up to us till nearly the time of badging. Being from Surrey, I intended to join the Surreys originally, but - like a couple of others, Geoff Lee and Fred Bailey were two of them, changed my mind before the 'Passing off the Square' ceremony - at which we were handed our regimental collar badges but still of course kept the HCB cap badge. The reason I changed, and he knows it, is because John Blanchette was my section commander in training. He continually told us the R. Sussex was the best, and we respected and admired him so much, we made the switch. Glad I did!
