That reminded me of when I was at the depot in Bassingbourn. They sent me down to Truro to collect an absentee from the police station. We had to travel down over night by the sleeper train. The army did not want to pay for an overnight sleeper and thought that the escort and I could magic up transportation. In the end they did pay up but it took a lot of bitching and stamping of the feet. Also when in Catterick I, and two others were sent to Warminster for our small arms course. BHQ would not give us travels warrants because I had a car and that meant they (the MOD) didn't have to pay for warrants. They were correct in assuming I would travel by road. Therefore I was told I would take the others with me. The MOD would not pay for the petrol that I was going to use so that they wouldn't face the expense of warrants. What so infuriating was that they never asked they ordered.
