Dear Tony

The recent return of 55 sets of remains from North Korea to the US has prompted a timely change in policy by the MOD over DNA testing. We are still missing up to 295 bodies from the Korean War but with the exception of Pte Edmunds (1 WELCH), and one or two others for exceptional reasons, we have never gathered a comprehensive DNA database (in contrast to the US and Australia) making it very hard to identify remains when they come to light. The MOD issued an appeal (attached) for families of Korean War MIA to come forward on 1 Aug. So far there has only been a very small number of enquiries. While this mainly concerns the Glosters, we had an officer and 135 ranks from the Middlesex and the Queen's Royal Regiment who formed the Middlesex Company that were sent to Korea.

If you have a relative who went to Korea and was KIA but had no known grave you may wish to contact the MOD to provide a DNA sample to help identify any remains that are found. All the details are in the attached letter.
