LAST 3 MONTHS23rd April St George’s DayThe St George’s Day Service was well attended this year with many members bringing personal guests. The Service was followed by lunch in one of the Cathedral buildings.16th March Unveiling of VC Commemorative StoneA VC Commemorative Stone was unveiled in Brighton by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex for Lieutenant Ernest Beal VC of the Yorkshire Regiment. Afterwards a Blue Plaque was unveiled on his family home on the Brighton to Lewes road. Lieutenant Beal had enlisted in the Sussex Yeomanry, which later became the 16th Battalion of the Regiment where he was a Colour-Sergeant. He was then commissioned into the Yorkshire Regiment where he was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross on 22nd March1918 at St Leger, for saving the life of one of his men. He died of his wounds later that day. The Brighton & Hove Branch was in attendance on the Parade and Bill Wood gavea speech on behalf of the Royal Sussex Regiment.30th June Regimental Memorial GardenA new Regimental Memorial Garden for the Regimental Association was dedicated on Saturday 30th June at Herstmonceux Castle. Apart from the twelve Beech trees at Arundel Castle Cricket Ground, this is the only other garden memorial to the Regiment within Sussex. The site is formed around the grave of Peter the Lamb, a Southdown sheep, which was donated by farmer Passmore from Lancing to be the mascot of Lowther’s Lambs (11th, 12th and 13th Battalions) when they were forming in late-1914.The Eastbourne Branch is to be congratulated for arranging to have this garden constructed and for meeting the costs of doing so. Personal memorial plaques may be presented but they are to conform to the Garden’s standard design.FUTURE EVENTS 20184th September Royal Sussex Stakes, GoodwoodThe Royal Sussex Stakes will be held at Goodwood on Tuesday 4th September. Branches and individuals are invited to apply for tickets on the Application Form attached. There will also be a Regimental Box at a cost of £72 a head.8th September: AGM and Annual DinnerThe Annual Dinner will be held in the Lewes Town Hall on Saturday 8th September. The application form for tickets is attached and Branches are to ensure the tickets are properly accounted for. In view of the Commemorative Year, tickets for the Dinner are £25.All members are encouraged to attend the AGM beforehand. The AGM is at 4 pm and the Dinner at 6 pm.3
9th-11th September Chichester Branch Trip to PriezChichester Branch is to visit Priez to commemorate the end of the war with the French. 31st October – 1st November Battlefield Tour – The Regiment’s last Battles of the Great WarWe will visit the sight of the crossing of the Sambre-Oise Canal by the 2nd Royal Sussexon 4th November 1918 and the attack across the Rhonelle River (just upstream from the Canal) by the 9th Royal Sussex on 6th November 1918. The 9th Battalion advanced as faras Bersillies where the last member of the Regiment was killed in action on 10th November 1918.8th November Westminster AbbeyAt 11 am, a member of the Royal Family will visit the Regimental Plots. Because of security implications, those who wish to attend will need to ask the Regimental Secretary for a ticket.At 3.50 pm we will hold our Regimental Service at our Regimental Plot. Tickets are notrequired.Following the Service a buffet will be provided at the Red Lion pub in Parliament Street.Benevolence: As always managed well by PWRR we had 9 cases last year all were well supported with cash grants to assist with EPVs, care-cost assistance and general benevolence.Do you know somebody of the Regiment or their dependant in need?Get them to contact SSAFA or RBL, or speak to me.
