Royal Sussex Regiment WW1 Memorial, Priez, near Chateau Thierry 10 September
You may well be aware there is a trip being organised to Priez in September, and there are still a few seats available on the coach and availability at the hotel .

The 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment went in to France in August 1914, it landed at Le Havre and then went forward to Picardy where it was involved in the retreat from Mons. It suffered its first casualties at Priez on 10th September during the Battle of the Aisne. They then moved to Ypres where they fought during the advent of trench warfare until 15th November 1914.

However the first battle of Ypres which was the chief glory of the old regular army, and was also the end of it. More than 50,000 British soldiers fell in the battle with many battalions being almost annihilated.

You may recall that in September 2014 a memorial was unveiled in the small hamlet of Priez in northern France, to mark where the Royal Sussex Regiment suffered its first fatal casualties of WW1 on the 10th of that month 100 years earlier.

The monument is a memorial to the 7,302 members of the regiment who died during the Great War of 1914-18 and was unveiled on 10th September 2014.

I was present too, as a member of the Royal Sussex Regimental Association.

The Royal Sussex Regiment in conjunction with the Mayor of Priez and his fellow Councillors plan to mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW1 on Monday 10th September 2018 with a special ceremony at the memorial. Other French officials will attend including most probably the Mayor of Chateau Thierry, the local Member of Parliament and the Departmental Prefect.

The Association’s involvement will be driven by its Chichester Branch who have formed an Organising Committee.

The Association plans to take its veterans out by coach on Sunday 9th September, have them stay overnight at Chateau Thierry, returning to the UK on Tuesday 11th via ‘The Armistice Clearing’ in the Compiegne Forest.

The organising committee have been working hard along with the people of Priez to finalise arrangements including costs, accommodation, and the event itself
