I have received the following message:

I am sorry to report that John Hobden died unexpectedly of a heart attack on 2018 April 15. His funeral will be held at Eastbourne Crematorium at 13:00 on Wednesday May 2nd.

John was born in January 1935, the 4th of 8 children (3 boys and 5 girls). The family home was Hodges Farm in Bodle Street (fondly known as “the centre of the universe”). He went to the local primary school till the age of 11 and then to secondary school in Hailsham till aged 15. The Hobden family were farmers and he was employed on a local farm until December 1953, when he joined the infantry battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment in which he served for 3 years. After early training in Sussex and Wiltshire he spent time in Germany, Cyprus and Suez. He relished the travel and camaraderie of the army, quite different from the routines of farming where, although he enjoyed working with animals, the hours were long and not so rewarding. In his teens and early twenties, he enjoyed his motor cycles, quite powerful machines at that time!
