As a naive 17 year old, I went from my home near Rye into Hastings to the recruiting office in York Parade (now Argos) and told Sgt Bob Hare I wanted to join the army. He gave me the test papers and when he checked them he said I had done well and could choose which regiment I would like to join.
I said the RMP, I had scored enough marks to go into them, but he looked at me and said are you related to Jim, I said he was my older brother.
He informed me that I should join the Royal Sussex but I was sure I wanted to be a military policeman, he said OK but you know Jim can claim you into the regiment, what he didn't tell me was that I didn't have to go, so I thought oh well I may as well go into the Royal Sussex from the start.
Peter Crick was my training Sgt (poor man).
I was issued with a uniform with the HCB badge which I thought was a temporary thing for new recruits and would get a proper badge after training.
HOW BLOODY WRONG CAN ONE PERSON BE?
