: : PASSCHENDALE. My Grandfather James William Talman was killed at this place. His body was never found along with 55,0000 others whose names are on the Gate. His is on panel 33.
: : The Battle of Passchendaele, fought July 1917, is sometimes called the Third Battle of Ypres. For the soldiers who fought at Passchendaele.
: : I did have his medals but I am sure my son when at junior school swapped them for a bag of marbles

: My grandfather was killed at Passchendaele - the Third Battle of Ypres - and when we took a Guard of Honour to the 50th Anniversary at Ypres in 1967, all members of the Guard had lost a relative at Passchendaele in 1917. It was very moving as Regiments weren't allowed to provide a Guard of Honour unless they had lost a 1,00 killed - such were the casualties.
Apologies, it should be 1,000 killed!
