No real secret Dave, what Ian was doing using telegraphy (TG) is establishing comms with users of that method.
A CQ call is an all stations call asking the other call signs on his net to report his signal strength. Instead of using plain language we used Q and Z codes for example QRK = how strong do you hear me? IMI is a barred signal meaning " I'm going to ask you a question and so on.
Hope that explains a fairly complicated question.
