One day during the very early hours, the Spanish opened their gates.(If you remember there were two sets of gates, ours and theirs.) Ours were always open through out the day until 'bedtime'.On this occasion the Spanish opened up and after the Guard Comd called the Duty Officer the order was given to open our gates. I was told that the CO attended with other dignitaries and whilst they were all observing to see what was happening, thinking that the boarder had finally been opened up no doubt, a Spanish soldier came out with a tin of paint and touched up the paint work. Job done he then closed the gates and all was back to normal...
