1.) In 1970's suburban Connecticut, a young father must come to terms with his seven year-old son's tendencies towards playing with Barbies and dresses instead of soccer balls and playing catch. The precocious, lovable boy does not necessarily fit in with societal norms of how a "boy" should act, and just likes what he likes. The father tries gently but firmly to mold him into a young boy, enrolling him in soccer tryouts and discouraging dressing up as a princess, but must wrestle with the boy's indomitable spirit and charm in the process. In the end, the father sees that the only thing he has done for his child is hurt him and, in a brave act of compassion, makes a big step in beginning to accept his son's identity and personality for what it is.
2) Henry (7, but could be played by a slightly older but very young looking actor)-- Precocious, sassy but meek at times, gentle, extremely loving, curious, passionate, and, most importantly, not overtly "boyish" in action.
3) Dean (35), Henry's dad. Intelligent and sympathetic, but also firm in morals. A mechanic. Loves his family dearly. A huge Mets fan. Rarely cries, and if he did, would hide it from others. A possible (overly handsome, though) celebrity would be Patrick Wilson.
4) Virginia (35), Dean's wife and Henry's mom. A benevolent presence in the household. Very liberal and progressive, she completely accepts Henry and encourages his actions and supports him. A young Meryl Streep, or Rachel Weisz.
5) Barbara (10), a wistful young girl. Henry's sister. Sarcastic, a bit sassy, but day-dreamy. Very mature for her age. She used to be Henry's best friend and playmate, but she is slowly growing out of that phase. Think a young Scarlett Johannsson (Lost in Translation) or Kirsten Dunst (The Virgin Suicides).
6) Mike (36), a neighbor down the block who is Dean's baseball buddy. Has kids of his own and a perfect little family. Extremely masculine and rather tough. A Mark Wahlberg, perhaps.
