I went to spend a nice day in Woodstock this past Monday, Columbus Day. I had not been there in years but was looking forward to the smiles, warm greetings, artists and that old Woodstock I had known. What I got was swings saying no parking, no photo taking, no pets, no loitering, the store keepers had no smiles or greetings just a bunch of sad looking old people who appear lost in the past. The same old Jefferson Starship Tee shirts and Woodstock posters talking of the love generation, but where did they go?
One store owner leaving and locking his shop jumped into his old Chevy and when it started the smoke choked those around the area. The town was pretty dead and we decided to grab a sandwich in a deli. The owner of the Deli was talking “at” (not to) his help like they were idiots. It was pitiful and we left there too.
We headed down to New Paltz which was packedwith people and they were laughing and spending their money.
Woodstock, wake up and take stock in your city. It is like a dying town whose shopkeepers have not changed a thing in years and it shows. I doubt I will ever go back and it looks like others feel the same way.
What a shame.
