CommentsI grew up around tube technology and when in the Army, I repaired radars for the HAWK missile system, which when fielded, was all vacuum tubes

Question: One place says 17:00 UTC and the other says 20:00 UTC. Which is it ?

CommentsI'll be there tomorrow!

I'm running a Kenwood TS-520S station with the external VFO-520, MC-50, AT-200, SP-200 and SM-220 w/ BS-5 through a Hustler 5BTV vertical.

I have another station I am restoring right now for AM use. It's a Hammarlund HQ-170AC w/VHF, an awesome receiver that can hear a bird fart in Sri Lanka 2kc away from some lid with a GDO running into a kW amp.
I'm pairing this with a couple of my restoration projects, a complete B&W 5100S/51SB rig that needs some cleaning and a WRL Globe Hi-Bander 62 w/external VFO that needs a power transformer.

I plan on shoving out the signal old school with 135' of #14 wire.

If it doesn't glow, it's not radio!

CommentsI'm sort of a paradox. I read your comments on e-ham, on the "the bands are not active when there is no contest" thread. I contest, but I also ragchew (when I can find the time). I'm sort of an OT (I'm 43, and I've been licensed since 1978 & active since 1982). I also moderate the Kenwood Hybrids net.

My station - FT-897D (for contesting, VHF & UHF, digital modes, and HFpack stuff), and some semi-vintage rigs (1976 TS-820, and an early 70s Swan 270B). I'd love to join into vintage nets or roundtables like yours, but they all are held on Sunday afternoons, when I'm doing volounteer work at a local animal shelter. Well, gotta run - I run a Feld Hell (Hellschreiber) net on 8m on Tuesday nights.

Ellen

CommentsActually, if you are talking about my National...its an NCX-5. Only real difference between the 3 & the 5 was that the 5 incorporated a mechanical digital vfo display. That was probably a first for that time period (1964) And even it has a couple of transistors in it...used in the VFO circuit. It works well, fairly hot receiver.

CommentsOoops! Forgot to mention that I also ahve a Yaesu FT-897D, that is my contest rig (I contest QRP), and digital modes rig.

BTW, I happen to think the National NCX-3 looks cool. If I could find one cheap, I wouldn't mind getting it. OK, you can stop gasping now, over my interest in a "mediocre" NCX-3. LOL

CommentsRead your e-Ham article "What is it about Vintage Radios?. Have been a Ham since 1978 (and Extra Class since Jan 1994). When I was a General in the 80s & early 90s, I woned Vintage-type gear, because it was all I could afford. BTW, hybrids are just as valid as vintage rigs (and have some fo the same good transmit audio as all-tube rigs), as ll hollow state rigs are. Many of the Drakes (including the T4XC & R4B I used to have years ago [good rigs - whish I ahdn't gotten rid of them]) incorporated transistors in some parts of their design.

I have 2 Vintage rigs at the present time: 1.) 1976 Kenwood TS-820 (the first year they were built), which has just the analog National-syle [the first year models only offered the digital display as an option]). I retubed & neutalized it a few months back with a new set of 6146Bs. The Kenwood is my "take me back to my college days" rig, since it's sort of similar to the TS-830S, I used to operate in the 80s from W9YT (the Univ. of WI ham club station); 2.) Swan Cygnet 270B - I won this for $100 in an Aug. bid from the radio club I used to belong to (MANCORAD - W9DK). They were clearing out old gear. It may need some work on it. My Swan used to be used as a loaner to club members, that needed a rig to use. I acutally borrowed it from Jan 1993 - March 1993, right after I got my Advanced, and was between rigs. I would not be surpised to find out that I may have been the last person to use the rig (when the club still owned it), since 1993.
