I did not know it until the poor animal was actually going into renal failure and had to be in ICU for 2 days. He went into urinary retention and did not show any pain, until he started moaning when he moved, one night at midnight of course. He had crystals but no infection, and they had blocked his bladder opening. They recommended the Science Diet food, which was expensive, but I found that in the long run, it was not that expensive, because it is so good for them that they don't need to eat as much of it.
