Also, what type of surgery are you looking to have?
I was faced with literally not living another 4-5 yrs, swelling in my legs so horrible after working that they would split, venous stasis, and a myriad of other medical issues capped with the pre-diabetic label this last spring.
I had the gastric bypass in Sept. 2009 and regret it every.single.day. I've had great weight loss (down 90 lbs, 115 to go). I had major complications from the surgery itself and now still have issues that may be lifelong, I'm told, as the second surgery I required, an emergent omentectomy for peritonitis and other things, nearly killed me but I now have pelvic nerve entrapment syndrome. This is my biggest regret! Sex is awful right now, painful and I dread it because the entrapped nerves cause a stabbing pain while having sex. I already had peripheral neuropathy from a previous exposure but now have a burning pain in my right thigh from that same entrapment.
I would suggest you determine your goals, the speed you want/need to get the weight off, and what you are willing to risk to get it. Gastric bypass and duodenal switch are significant surgery, lap banding is at least reversible if for some reason you can't or don't want to keep it.
Depending on your current weight and BMI, you may not even be eligible for gastric bypass.
Consider all options, what you've already tried, and what you hope to accomplish. ALl my best wishes to you - and please come back to tell us your decision!
Happy New Year!
