| Comments | Mr.Kouvaris, my family watches Action News every evening and usually enjoy doing so. Unfortunately, watching it today was not so pleasant due the fact that you allowed your personal opinion to cloud your professional judgement. What you said regarding Urban Myers should not have been stated in such a manner! Calling Mr. Myers "A Phony", just made us see you in a totally different light! That statement, Mr. Kouvaris, is strictly your opinion and should not been voiced in such a personal manner! I'm just saying as a fan. How would you respond if someone spoke of you on a public news station that way?? Just think about it, please..... |

| Comments | I’m posting this because Sam is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee.

Let me preface my remarks by explaining that I bleed Cleveland Browns brown and orange. I’ve been a fan since before Art Modell bought the team in 1961. My love dates back to the days when former Steelers head coach Chuck Noll was a player with the team. Even with the reincarnated Browns’ dismal record since returning, I remain a fan, and always will be. So I must preface my call for Art Modell’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame by acknowledging that in ways too numerous list, Modell was a poor owner and businessman.

Then there is “The Move,” also known in Cleveland as “The Betrayal.” In light of this, a lifelong Clevelander and Browns fan suggesting that Art Modell belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame might appear to have lost his mind.
So let’s look at some inconvenient facts regarding the move from Cleveland to Baltimore.

The Browns’ old home field, Cleveland Municipal Stadium, was built in the 1930’s and, as such, had been deteriorating for many years. It was already outdated and in mediocre condition when Modell bought the Browns, and was steadily getting worse as the decades passed. In spite of this, Modell created the Stadium Corporation, which leased the stadium from the city for one dollar a year. Under the terms of the lease, the corporation would enjoy the revenues from all the Indians home games, all the Browns home games, and any other events that could be booked into the facility. In exchange for this, Modell’s corporation assumed all maintenance costs, which were growing rapidly each year. Still, he made money on the deal, and the city got out from under the economic thumb of keeping the facility utile.

During this period, one NFL team after another was moving into a new stadium. Also, the Indians were seeking a new facility. Modell knew this, yet was amenable to sharing a new stadium with the Indians.

But the American League and Indians management were not. They wanted a baseball-only facility for the team. The Indians and the league got what they wanted, and the team moved into the superb ballpark first named Jacobs Field, after the two brothers who owned the team at the time, and now named Progressive Field.

Once the Indians moved into their new digs, Modell was stuck with maintaining the Stadium. But he no longer had the revenue stream generated by 80 baseball games.
Modell neither demanded, nor even requested a new stadium, even though the Browns desperately needed one.

Instead, using his own money, he paid millions for studies and designs to renovate the Stadium. The best of these plans would have cost about $65 million to execute.

When he approached the city with his renovation plans, he got the “Talk to the hand!” treatment. Not a nickel would be forthcoming.
Coincidentally, the primary reason owner Robert Irsay relocated the Baltimore Colts to Indianapolis is because the city of Baltimore was prevailing in a 15-year dispute with the Colts organization over the need for renovation to the team's playing facility, Memorial Stadium. But what really sent the team packing in the middle of the night on March 29, 1984 was a ruling by the Maryland legislature that that would permit the city of Baltimore to simply take the Colts away from Irsay.

Meanwhile, the city of Indianapolis offered the Colts owner a $12,500,000 loan, a $4,000,000 training complex, and the use of the brand new $77.5 million, 57,980-seat Hoosier Dome. And so in the dead of night moving trucks packed up everything and moved the Colts to Indianapolis.

Baltimore, still hurting over the loss of the Colts, ramped up its efforts to bring pro football back to the city. Since 1984, Baltimore figured out what it had to do to bring an NFL team back to the city. And they did it.

Cleveland gave Modell’s proposals the cold shoulder for five years, and didn’t even begin to discuss improvements to the Stadium until other cities, including Baltimore, began courting the Browns. But it was too little too late.

Perhaps the real clincher was the construction of a new $100 million dollar arena in downtown Cleveland for the Cleveland Cavaliers which, like the adjacent Jacobs Field, was paid for with a sin tax on alcohol and tobacco. The arena was named after Cavs owners Gordon and George Gund, members of one of Cleveland’s wealthiest families. Gund Arena has been renamed Quicken Loans Arena.
In the meantime, Modell did what any businessman would do under such circumstances. With the assistance of his friend, the late Al Lerner (who would eventually own the new Browns franchise in Cleveland), Modell began to negotiate with Baltimore about moving the team. Finally, a deal was made, and Modell made the announcement in Baltimore. During his statement, he said “I had no choice.” And as much as Cleveland Browns fans dismissed this claim as garbage, from a business and civic standpoint, it was entirely true.

He was in dire financial straits. And compared to the feast Baltimore served up, Cleveland was offering Modell crumbs, and only at the last minute.

Modell did what any businessman would do. If blame is to be assigned for the departure of the Cleveland Browns, it must be directed at the movers and shakers, who thought they could ignore the winds of change in the NFL, ignore the need to improve Cleveland Municipal Stadium, and ignore Modell. The fans were stabbed in the back. But the fingerprints on the dagger belong to big shots in city and county government.

After the move, they were so desperate to divert responsibility for virtually chasing away the Browns with neglect that was anything but benign, the City of Cleveland sued Modell, the Browns, Stadium Corp, the Maryland Stadium Authority and the authority's director, John A. Moag Jr.

Ultimately, Modell did something Clevelanders still fail to fully appreciate. He ceded the Browns' name, colors and heritage (including team records) to Cleveland for a replacement franchise, in the form of a new team or a relocated team. Although Modell did this to settle the lawsuit, many legal experts have said that the plaintiffs would have lost. Either way, in the end, the Brown and Orange are back where they belong.

For decades, civic leaders and politicians insisted there was no way to finance a renovation of Municipal Stadium, until Cleveland’s power brokers saw what their years of intractability had wrought. But after the move and the subsequent promise of pro football returning to Cleveland, the city somehow found a way to come up with almost seven times as much money to build a new stadium as Modell wanted to fix up the old one.

Once the announcement was made, countless Browns fans unleashed a stream of hatred and bigotry so outlandish, it became a civic embarrassment. One example of this unbridled rage related to an international event that was mentioned at the press conference in Baltimore announcing the Browns’ move. Before Modell and other dignitaries spoke, they asked for a moment of silence in honor of Yitzak Rabin, the Prime Minister of Israel and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who had just been assassinated just days earlier. At the first Browns home game after the announcement, someone at the Stadium held up a large sign that read “THEY KILLED THE WRONG JEW!”

Throwing more gasoline on the flames of anti-Modell rage was the infamous cover of the December 4, 1995 issue of Sports Illustrated that consisted of an illustration of Modell gut-punching a Browns fan fully decked out in Browns Dawg Pound regalia. The article, atypical for the magazine, was entirely biased against Modell.
Of course, those most responsible for the move, the power brokers who didn’t give a damn about Modell or the condition of Municipal Stadium until it was too late, were eager to lead the torch-bearing villagers ready to march on Castle Modell.

Obviously, the move was a knife through the heart of Browns fans. Many were so steamed that they would have choked Modell to death, and tried to find a way to bring him back to life, just so they could choke him to death again!
But as time passed, this fan came to understand that because he had the nerve to fire the legendary Paul Brown, Modell would always be seen as a carpetbagger who would barely be tolerated during winning seasons and despised during the bad times.

In spite of all this, reasonable people would ask, “So why on earth does Modell deserve a place in the Hall of Fame?”

The answer is that as Chairman of the NFL Television Committee for 31 years, Modell changed the way Americans viewed football and came to regard pro football’s place in American culture itself.

Modell worked tirelessly and almost single-handedly to bring pro football to prime time, and was the fiercest crusader among naysayer owners for a crazy innovation known as “Monday Night Football.” Modell’s work in this regard was the single greatest catalyst in making football the dominant American sport. If any owner should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, it is Art Modell.

Love him (Lots of people love Modell… in Maryland.) or hate him. But one must acknowledge his contribution to the game. No individual was more responsible for transforming pro football from its marginal status in the 1950’s to the sports leviathan it is today.
|

I do not care for the two who are on now. 1010 is suppose to be sports talk. I no longer listen to 1010 and I am just waiting to see what station picks them up. I also forgot to mention Joe. Even the National Championship game will not be on broadcast tv. I don't have cable or sat, and I don't have $30 a night to spend at a sports bar to watch the game. I'm sure there are a lot of people all over the country that are like me and won't see much college football this post season. |

We need a quarterback that will do the job every game....Our David Garrard should have been to the game sunday supporting Trent Edwards and the rest of team....he has disappointed many of us....Maurice Jones was there helping what he can...how do they expect us to keep going to games and nothing changing....Jack DelRio cant play for the guys and having a Leader Quarterback that supports the rest of team...is the most important thing....we cant get over this...and then to have him on the telephone during game...the coach should have made Dave go to the game...right now we are not very happy....we are ok with Jack DelRio staying but the team needs some big.....big....changes... |

| Comments | CONGRATULATIONS to the Baldwin Middle School Football Team on a Fantastic Season! The BMS Indians knocked off Darnell Cookman Vikings in an absolute Battle Royal last night at Viking Field. In a triple overtime duel the Indians Kicker sent an extrapoint through the uprights to win the game 19 to 18. At the end of regulation play the score was tied 0 - 0. The Vikings won 1st possesion and scored 6. Baldwin's Defense held strong and denied the Vikings a 2-point conversion. The mighty Indian's answered with a TD of their own, but missed an extra point attempt. Baldwin started the second over time and scored 6, but were held out of the endzone on the 2 point conversion attempt. The Vikings then had their second attempt and again scored a TD. The Mighty Indian Defense once again held strong. Tied at 12 - 12, the Vikings scored again in the 3rd overtime and were again unable to convert. Baldwin's offense took to the field again and got in the endzone to tie the game at 18. Opting for the point after Baldwin sent the kicker back on the field and.....Good snap, good hold, good kick......it's good, it's good, it's good! Balwin Middle School has won the West Gateway Conference Championship. CONGRATULATIONS once again to Head Coach Beninati and his staff and especially the Young Men of Balwin Middle School Indians Football Team. Way to "DO WORK!!!" |

| Comments | Just heard Sam speaking about our poor defense, and rightfully placed most of the blame on Jack. He spoke about the poor play at the safety position. WRONG !! The major problem is and has been for at least 3 seasons Rashean Mathis as the veteran member of the def. backfield. He has been resting on his laurels since selected to the pro bowl. He cannot cover anyone, avoids contact like the plague. Occasionally he will make a tackle but his misses are many. Why is he the only backfield player who has not been benched? He is a terrible mentor for our younger players and he needs to take his all pro status and hit the road. |

He has taught countless youth how to be men and has helped so many of our young men go to colleges they never thought were possible. It is one of the most horrible decisions that could be made to release him in the prime of the recruiting season for college football. How many young men will never realize their potential because of this coaching loss. There aren't many great things to say about this high school but he was one.

Bring Back Coach Clemons. | Comments | sam why isn't anyone willing to admit that david g. is not the QB that the organization has made him out to be. If jacksonville loses this team it will only be because the organization would not admit to failure after sticking with this QB for so long. the jags have all of the pieces in place to be a great team, except for the QB position. look at the pre season mcgown, not sure spelling is right, led the league in passing and he can move out of the pocket, david g. can't. i would hope that you are willing to at least throw this idea out there, try mgown now before it's too late to make the play-offs. |

| Comments | As one of the few local sportscasters who truly understands, I’m hoping you’ll take some time this week and mention this Saturday’s only college football game. I’m amazed how there is little, if any, play in the local media about the Army-Navy game. While I know Navy’s done a good job of making the outcomes of the game less meaningful over the last seven years, there’s still so much that’s right about this game. I grow weary of all the local SEC types and their constant blaring of the SEC trumpets. They need to actually sit down and watch this game played by young men who know what the future holds for them. These men volunteered to enter one of our service academies in time of war, knowing their future assured them of going into harm’s way. They play football for the love of the game not for some promise of a future financial windfall. When tears are shed at the end of the game, it’s because many of them know it’s the last time they will ever play the game that defined their youth. Not to take anything from Tim Tebow as I think he is an amazing player and a quality person; but, his tears don’t quite carry the same weight. By the way, unbeknownst to most people in this part of the country, a young man by the name of Ricky Dobbs is poised to break Tim Tebow’s record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. He currently is tied for the record with Tebow and Chance Harridge (USAFA grad) and should break it on Saturday. I would think discussion of this game and it’s impact on the men and women serving our country in the Army and the Navy would be a welcome respite from discussing the latest in a long line of Tiger Woods’ indiscretions. Hope you agree and make it a part of your program tomorrow or Friday. If so, please let me know so I can make sure to listen in.
P.S. You and I have met on a number of occasions through our mutual friend, Rick Murray. I miss going over to watch the Army-Navy game with him. I can’t imagine there was ever a non-Academy grad that has ever been a more devoted fan of Navy sports.
|

I have TIVO and replayed it several times.. I am referring to the play before GA scored a touchdown in the 3rd quarter, and they were driving with a running play. Spikes was in on the tackle and while in the pile of tacklers he stuck in his gloved fingers into the helmet of the runner ! Poking his face ... it was seen by a Bulldog player who came over asap and was pulling on Spikes. The reply on TV showed the incident but not the GA player coming over.. It was in clear view that Spikes was doing this and was awful to witness, and he should have been called out on this..
Do they get special passes for being current National Champions and # 1 now ????
I guess so.. check this out and let me know.. Spikes will be an All-American but never in my eyes ! (pun intended !)
Prosser being a Gator would cover this up too, so only giving this to you BRO !
Spikes was not successful, but say this player have gotten a scratched eye he could have suspended for the season, and still should be called out like the pros are for excessive hits later.... ITs on UTube if you want to search for it !
Bob |

| Comments | Pro football is an entertainment product, and right now, the Jaguars are a poor product. Getting rid of Shack Harris was a good start - Now is the time to get rid of Del Rio and his staff. The only thing that is consistent with this team is the mediocrity. I can not understand why, after all these years, the Jags cannot get an imaginative offensive coordinator. You will never succeed if you can't win in your division, and Jack can't win in the division. I still believe a no nonsense coach like Marty Shottenhiemer would do wonders. |

Have you read this article?

http://www.dailyworld.com/article/20090603/SPORTS/906030311/1006/Saints+sell+out+2010+season+tickets

Alarming for us, but congrats to New Orleans.

New Orleans is a smaller city than we are. This is very notworthy, and disappointing to Jag fans who may miss televised games if they are blacked out. Many, many of who were galvanized to bring a team to the city years ago.

Could the fix be a winning team? Maybe one that leadership develops a team that is exciting to watch?

It is disappointing that the Jaguars, the city, and its fans, are not in the same position as New Orleans.

Gary Richards |

Please check this and confirm.. 1975 they went to orlando and played in the championship series and also came in third... I believe that is where they will end up this year also.. Please verify and give credit where it is due. They also had a much better record.
Thanks for your attention.. Their coach was Bob West. |

| Comments | Sam- I can't believe you are not all over the Fletcher softball team. They just went 30-0 tonight heading to Plant City for the state championship. There was not one camera, not one reporter, nothing recording these remarkable young women except us parents with our cameras. This is a great story about an amazing group I think people would enjoy. If this was the football team you guys would have been falling over each other! Granted these girls won't make millions but I tell you what...most of these girls have played rec league and travel ball together since they were 10 years old and it's amazing to see the way they have matured together and just gell on the field. It's awesome and we hope to see you guys |

| Comments | Dear Mr. Kouvaris:

You are the only person I can think of that can assist with the urgent request I have regarding a young unmarried man, 22 years old, named Ryan Rossano, who is dying of cancer.

Off the record, Ryan's doctor has informed Ryan's parents, Ryan only has a matter of several weeks remaining before he cuccumbs to his illness. However, Ryan isn't aware that he only has a few weeks.

Ryan Rossano is a fine young man who graduated from Keystone Heights High School about 5 years ago. About the time he graduated, a melanoma was discovered on his temple in front of his ear. He went to a cancer doctor in Tampa where they did surgery and treatments for several months and it seemed that there was no more cancer. He was able to go to college in Michigan and play baseball. I meant to say earlier that he's played baseball since he was a little boy and was a wonderful baseball player and an awesome pitcher.

To make this story shorter, Ryan's cancer returned in January, 2009, quite unexpectedly. A scan showed a tumor the size of a large lemon. It was melanoma. He was operated on several times and has taken treatments since his cancer returned. His tumor is inoperable and, at the present time his chemo and radiation is injected directly into his brain. About a week ago, he was given just a few weeks to live. I said all of that to say this, if you have any connections with the ATLANTA BRAVES ORGANIZATION, could you please see if they can make it possible for Ryan to throw just one ball from their pitching mound either where they play their preseason games in Orlando or at Turner Field in Atlanta. Ryan is the BRAVES biggest fan and it is a dream of his to just throw 1 ball. He doesn't have much time, unless the Lord performs a miracle and heals him (and that is what all of us down here are praying for). Last week, when I attended a home Keystone Heights HS baseball game, I looked up and what did I see but Ryan with his Dad pushing him in a wheelchair. He was grinning from ear to ear. He tries to come to as many games as he can. A few weeks ago, he was able to warm up with the team and sit in the dugout with them.

Ryan's parents asked all of his friends to see if anyone has any connections with the BRAVES, to please get in touch with them and inform them of Ryan's request.

I know this is long, but I appreciate your reading it.

Ryan Rossano's parents are John and Lori Rossano, 6579 Kings Rd., Keystone Heights, FL 32656 Tel: 352-473-5952 E-mail: reeses2pkyahoo.com

To learn more about Ryan Rossano visit the following website:

http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/ryanrossano

Thanking you in advance for any assistance you may give regarding this matter.

Sincerely,

Joe Ponder
Tel: 352-473-2451 |

| Comments | Sam, just want to copy what i sent to ClearChannel about David Lamm. I heard you today talking with Frangie about it. Just sad that loyalty doesn't mean much anymore. I'm sure someone could have been done. Keep up the great job & i'll try to listen to you on L&T. Don't want to be late for work. Mr Anderson, Please pass this on to who ever would like to know how one person that has lived in Jacksonville, FL for over 20 years, feels today. I want to start this e-mail by saying that today was one of the sadest day since i've been in Jacksonville, FL. I heard that David Lamm is no longer with your company. I understand that times are tough right now and that everyone must make cut backs. But you mean to tell me that David Lamm was getting paid alot of money? Yeah i didn't agree with some of the things he said but again, if i didn't agree or took it person to anything anyone says in the radio market in Jacksonville, then i would just be a zombie. Everyone has their opinion. Well whether you want to read it or not i will give you mine. The lineup you have is not even anything locally except that italian dwarf from 4-7pm. Just like he likes to rag on everyone well that's my ragging on him. He may work for a news paper in New York but he surely doesn't care about the City of Jacksonville like David Lamm did and does. I won't even waist any further thoughts on your station. I see the website and all i see is soft porn and alot of the same news that i see on tv. So for your logo of "Jacksonville's Sports Leader", why don't you just call it 'FOX SPORTS RADIO" and leave it. Don't put the great name of Jacksonville on such a bad product. All the 'talent' OR lack there of that you have for sports radio are the ones that noone wanted. And the best one (Jim Rome) actually does tv for ESPN. I will make sure and not listen to you all since you all have national radios. If i wanted national radio i would get me a satellite radio. J.A.C.T. |

| Comments | Why is there so much emphasis on the Gators? Jacksonville and the entire Channel 4 news station are extremely over zealous about the Florida Gators victory. Would Florida State University get the same victorious praise? University of Florida is not even in Jacksonville. I'm excited that they won the national championship; however people don't want us to rant and rave about the upcoming inauguration for Barack Obama. Is that fair? Why do people feel that Barack Obama is not deserving of all the praise and fame as well. Barack Obama has accomplished a status that people will never experience in their entire lifetime. Why is it wrong to continue to celebrate? I'm ecstatic that this is the first African-American to become the president of the United States of America. I don't understand why it’s a problem when people continue to celebrate over Barack Obama's victory. They celebrate and give air time to the Florida Gators. Think about it! I appreciate Channel 4 providing news coverage for the upcoming inauguration. |

| Comments | sam, nothing to complain about here. we knew the jags would be a joke this year, they usually are. however, i would like your opinion about an ole miss player michael oher. ot, left side. where do you think he will go in the draft? any chance of the jags getting a good shot at him? Lord knows we need more blocking for garrard. he was hit over 100 times this year! no wonder he couldnt get off a decent pass! the stats on Oher: no sacks allowed on his side of the offensive line in THREE YEARS. 6'5", 318 pounds AND runs an impressive 40 yard dash. the jags would be stupid to not trade up for him. your thoughts? |

As far as I found, no one considers it a sport I guess, cause no one carries it on their sports channels or web pages. It would be nice to know the results of the races. | Comments | Dear Sam I watch the Jags games and I am so sick of us losing, I have been thinking if the Jags and the Gators have a ex game and gave the money to a good cause. I just think that they do not care if they win or lose they already have there money. Maybe they should get payed only if they win and take away if they lose ??? Then maybe they would play like they care. We as fans are tried of paying good money for tickets and beer drinks to see them play like they do not care. What do you think?? thanks (POOR) fan |

| Comments | Sam, the answer to the stump sam question tonite was incorrect. Clyde Simmons blocked a game winning field goal try & Chris Hudson picked it up & ran it in for a touchdown. Bill Cower did clench his fist in a show of I will smack you. the teams left the field but had to return for the extra point try. |

| Comments | hello Sam this is my first attempt to speak to you.. Today on the news Paul Spicer/ You or some one said these guys are professional... The jags that is.. well this weekened I started to write or call you to say this... There are now 3 types of football players in the NFL... 1.Pay-Fessionals they make some money but there really don't have it but they got Paid and that's All they really ever wanted.. 2.Play-Fessionals : These guys can Play Really Play But There just Playing They haven't Really Taken The Team / The Opportunity They've Been Given of life seriously but Maybe one day thev'll get It. 3. Professionals: Men That Take the Team Concept To The next level Unity, Trust, Hard Work, Togetherness, character, Sincerity and Obedience To There family, freinds, coaches and team mates.. For The Good of Every-One... That's Why There Professionals,,, Unfortunately The Jags Just Can't Get It... I Think the game is more Mental Than physical, but that's just me. Brother Jay |

| Comments | Sam, can you or someone change the ticker at the bottom of the page when the sports is on. The 'SamsSportsLine is so long, you don't have enough time to read the scores & highlights on that line. Also, is there a way to highlight only the winning team when showing the scores? Thanks... Enjoy the he-- out of all your shows. Yours is the only one that I will watch... |

| Comments | Your ticker in tonites Football Friday is wrong. The score last night in the Interlachen vs Crescent City was Interlachen 7 and Crescent City 34. You continually overlook the CC Raiders who are the 2007 District Champions with a record of 10-0. With 14 of their members going all county and 1 all state. They have started this season with a preseason win last week and now a win last night with their first game of the season. I know these kids don't come from a big A ranked school, but that makes them have to work harder to acheive what they do and for you to take their acheivements away is really horrible. |

This Friday night 9/5, the UNF rugby team is hosting FSU rugby team to a match starting at 7pm. The match is free to everyone and it is located on the intramural fields just north of UNF's stadium. If you like rugby league, you'll love rugby union. |

| Comments | Just heard you on L&T discussing KY Derby. A few mistakes: thoroughbreds are not shot through the head when they are euthanized. They are given a lethal injection. So the sound effects were unfortunate. Second, the thoroughbred industry does not permit artificial insemination. Horses must be bred the old fashioned way, with semanal collection and testing at the conclusion of the act to prove the stud's virilty. Now, IMHO. Anytime you use animals for sport, things can get ugly. Hunting and fishing are "sports" too. It's up to the industry itself to regulate humane treatment. Eight Bells was treated humanely throughout her life and at the conclusion of it. Unfortunately NBC's decision to not explain this makes for fodder on morning talk shows. |

| Comments | I heard you on Lex and Terry this morning talking about UK basketball and you proved with out a shadow of doubt that Floridians know nothing about roundball! Stick to football loser. UK fans didn't run off Tubby. He left because he couldn't handle the pressure. You defend him on his record while talking about a team HE RECRUITED losing by 40 points! Last night was a perfect example why Tubby needed to go. Go craw back in your football hole and leave backetball to those who have a clue. Mike |
