After listening to the commentary on the US edition of the Ipcress DVD I did trawl the net for some information about Charles Kasher and his coffee pots but probably not surprisingly drew a total blank! The device that Palmer uses in the film is a pretty generic cafetiere (a.k.a ‘French Press’) albeit with quite a stylish ‘flared lid’. I think that such a pot would have looked pretty exotic to British film goers in the mid 60’s outside cosmopolitan London and the continental restaurant trade. At a time when a tin of instant Nescafe was the height of domestic sophistication in the British kitchen Palmer’s early morning coffee routine certainly marked him out as an individual.
