Susy:
Thanks for sharing.

I'm an avid Golden Gopher football fan & always appreciative to hear about those individuals who helped establish and proliferate our rich football tradition---a tradition that your father, Mr. Bierhaus, undoubtedly helped build & flourish. If our current squad had 1/8 of his character we might have an actual win in the Big Ten. . .

All the best,

Cheers,
Brandon in St. Paul, MN

: : I thought I would let you know that my Dad, Gene Bierhaus, passed away on Thursday 10/11/06 at age 85. Gene was #58 on the 1940 and '41 Championship Gopher Football teams. He was one of the blockers who aided Bruce Smith on Smith's journey to becoming the U's only Heisman Trophy winner to date.

: : My Mom and Dad were high school sweethearts at Brainerd High (where Dad was known as the Battering Ram). When my Dad started playing on the Gophers as a freshman my Mom began a scrap book. She maintaned a scrap book for the four years my Dad played at the U. I would guess I have every newspaper article ever written and every photo ever taken of the 1939 to 1942 Gopher Football Team!
: : Dad was drafted to the Green Bay Packers in 1943 but his dream of playing pro football was dashed when Dad was called to a higher duty to serve as a Lieutenant in the Marine Corp and fight on Iwo Jima.

: : My Dad's face would light up when I would ask him to tell me what it was like to be on those Championship Gopher teams. He really relished his years at the U and knew how fortunate he was to have played under the awesome Bernie Bierman.

: : The world has lost one of the great Gophers and an even greater American.

: : I couldn't be more proud of you Dad and will miss you every single day.

: : Your loving daughter,
: : Susy

: There is nothing so rewrading as a life well-lived, and it seems your Dad did that and then some.

: I mourn the passing of that generation that
: people like your Dad made so great. They were
: a true jewel to the world.

: Those Gopher teams of 1940-41 were really
: something to be proud of. My own Dad was born
: in 1940 but I, too, light up a little when
: talking about Franck, Smith, Odsen, and the rest
: of them. They were truly great teams.

: Thanks for sharing,

: Steve
