2nd Bird Issues

Posted by on February 06, 2010 at 11:03:40:

Hi there. I just got a second GC conure last month from a family who no longer wanted her. She was hand-reasied but had serious cage aggression issues and definitely wasn't happy about the change when she moved into my apartment. My other conure is the typical super-sweet, adorable type that I can do anything with.
I wanted my new GC to be like him, but know that I can't rush things. I usually keep wings clipped, but both birds had all their primaries and could fly.
The new bird's bites were drawing blood and it was getting really bad (to where I didn't want to keep trying to handle her), so I decided to try clipping her wings and see if it brought her down a notch. It worked very well with respect to ending the biting, but she went from being a loud, aggressive bird to being a terrified, timid little thing. The biting completely stopped, which was pretty amazing, but seeing her depressed was not fun either. Up until a few days ago, I didn't really let the birds try interacting. I didn't want her bad behavior to rub off on him. But this past week, I have let them spend hours and hours together and for the past two nights they've slept in the same cage. She's become more outgoing and "happier", and my other bird is still happy to be held.
Does anyone think that this is only temporary, or might it stay this way? She still doesn't want me to hold her, but she's calmer when I do.
Is the way their behaving any indication of whether or not they're male or female?
