I can identify with being apprehensive about letting the bird out of the cage when it has bit you. I do not know if our GCC has changed since we got her at age 2 or if all the changes have been with us. Oh yes, we were warned that 2 is the nippy year.
Prior to letting our GCC out of her cage we often put a piece of apple in the one spot in the kitchen (on a Sumac branch we put there for her)we encourage her to fly to. Then before we let her out we sometimes put some apple on a wooden skewer and let our GCC take a few bites while we talk to her before opening the cage.
We anticipate giving prime attention to our GCC for the first 5 minutes she she out of her cage and keep her busy, offering a splash under a tap with cool water, walking room to room talking with her as she sits on a shoulder, etc.

If she is eating an apple she can not bite.

...All those things being said, sometmes I resort to the ridiculous and have not only a little polyester head scarf around my neck, and a bird shirt on for dropping, but I have put a towel on my head and neck when I'm home alone and unsure how she'll react.
