I am also planning on getting a second bird! I've had Loki since September, and I'm getting the new one in July. I hope that they do eventually become mates, even if they like each other better than they like me, they'll be happier for it. And besides that I'm training them for freeflight, so they'll be safer using the buddy system.
If you 're keeping them in separate cages, then I wouldn't worry about them becoming more attached to each other than to you.
You shouldn't get anything smaller than a greencheek, because they are aggressive toward smaller birds. Also, remember that green cheeks and other smallish conures can interbreed, so if you don't want chicks, then beware!
