I read somewhere a while back that they know it is not another bird in the mirror, but because they are very social creatures they love mirrors.
I have mirrors in my budgies' and my GCC's cages. There is a mirror for each budgie, and Frito (my GCC) has a hanging one that she plays with. She has not bonded with the mirror at all, neither have my budgies.
I wouldn't take them out. As long as they are not aggressive with them, I really don't see any harm in them having them.
