Hi All again
Follow up information on the Ashley.
During this weekend Nigel decided to see if the Ashley would still run. Memory is a strange thing as we were sure the reason that the Ashley was mothballed by us 35 years ago was because of big end trouble. Well Nigel fired up the old sidevalve on Sunday (10th) and with only a clean of the points and unblocking the fuel line she started and ran well with 30 to 50 pounds of oil pressure. We now think that Nigel resolved the big ends and mothballed the car due mainly to moving house. This has changed our view a bit and subject to some more serious testing may stay with the original running gear. Nigel tells me that somewhat amazingly, the fuel pump, clutch, and front brakes all still work well, the rear brakes are sticking and one carb is flooding but all the instruments worked straight off including the rev counter and even the horn worked. Obviously all this will be looked at before it goes back on the road but it is quite amazing how long you can store a vehicle and still find it working. Nigel did say that the cooling system was like a sieve due to all the rubber pipes having rotted. So basically we are looking at a lot of replacement rubber (including tyres)and some spannering and cleaning with a complete repaint and we will be there! I will get some pictures to Richard shortly.
