Ashley 750 not lost

Posted by on August 05, 2008 at 05:48:54:

Hi All
Following contact with Richard I thought you all might like to hear about this Ashley of ours. Not lost but mothballed by us for 35 years and now hopefully about to be resurrected. Some details below. Richard has answered the question I first posted.

Our car is an Ashley 750 (6’ 9”). We purchased the car over 40 years ago and as kids rebuilt it. It is incredibly complete and having stored it for over 30 years have decided to restore it. (We pulled it out of the roof of our garage last weekend!). It is on an Austin seven chassis, fully boxed and strengthened, with all the Bowden independent suspension mods and a full race ford sidevalve with all the aquaplane bits. (Since I first wrote this I have discovered that it is more likely the twin carb setup and 4 branch manifold are Buckler parts as they are steel). This is mated to a MG magnette box with remote. It has a full hardtop with both side window units and also the separate 750 homologated windscreen (as of 1958). My brother drove this on the road in 1970 but continual problems with the big ends on the sidevalve caused us to mothball it. The rest as they say is history. We would love to know how many of these cars survive and of course to register it. The reg no. is 39 GTM and we have all the paperwork and history and it is on the DVLA computer. Our intention is to rebuild it using a Reliant 850 powertrain to make it road driveable in this modern world and as a kitcar we do not think this would be inappropriate, particularly as Ashley and Reliant had connections. The body shell is as near perfect as one would expect and it has not been cut about or changed. My brother Nigel and I are lifelong motor nuts and between us own classics, Nigel a Sunbeam Tiger, myself a 75 Merc SLC. I also owned a Ginetta G3 in 1968 which I ran as a daily driver. This is the car that is now owned by the Ginetta club and is considered to be the only G3 left. Nigel worked for Ginetta for a number of years during the early 70’s building G4’s and G15’s. So we are now keen to get the old Ashley back on the road. We thought you might be interested, particularly as we can find little information anywhere about Ashley’s.
