DOVER'S VCs

We have 4 holders of the Victoria cross buried in Dover cemeteries and another 4 closely associated with the town.

William McWheeney a Sergeant in th 44th Essex Regiment won his VC on 20th october 1854 Crimea under heavy fire he carried a private soldier to safety he also saved the life of a Corporal.He is buried in St James Cemetery.

Lt Charles Wooden of the 17th Lancers (Duke of Cambridge's Own)Won his VC on 26th October 1854 at Balaclava in the Crimea. He and a surgeon went out under heavy fire to aid a seriously wounded officer.He also rode in the Charge of the Light Brigade.Also buried in St James Cemetery.

L/Cpl Williiam House 2nd Battalion The Royal Berkshire Regiment.On the 2nd of August 1900 at Mosilikatse Nek South Africa,he went out against advice under heavy fire in an attempt to rescue a wounded Sergeant, he was wounded himself.Also buried in St James Cemetery.

William Traynor A Sergeant in the 2nd battalion the West Yorkshire Regiment(ThePrince of Wales Own)On the 6th February 1901 at Bothwell Camp,South Africa he ran out of a trench to assist a wounded man.He was wounded himself and a L/Cpl came to his aid They carried the wounded man to safety, though wounded he remained on duty to encourage his men.Buried in Charlton Cemetary.
Other VC connections.
Lt Edward Benn Smith won his VC 21st August 1918,he took a machine gun post with rifle and bayonet .He killed at least 6 of the enemy.He was only 19 and was also later awarded a DCM.after the war ended he retired but rejoined at the outbreak of WW2 he was killed in action 12th January 1940 in France.
