CommentsI acquired WOF4 from Austen Nurse in 1960 and competed through 1961 in speed trials, hill climbs and club races. It was a thoroughly delightful car with a decent turn of speed (class winner flat out down the prom at Weston SM). We had a rather serious accident at Rufforth in 1961 requiring a complete rebuild at Wolverhampton including fitting a new wide grill finless body; the colour was changed from BRG to dark blue but the reg. no. was retained. I swapped the car back to Austen for a new Cortina GT in 1963. Not a good move!
Many thanks for offering the pleasure of this excellent website.

CommentsGreat pages and info. I owen cars 30-163 and 30-221 featured on page 25 of unknowns. Car #30-163 was used on the advertisement that the dealer put out in Ohio in the 60's.

CommentsVisited Bantock House today to see the display of Turner cars and have a good chat to some of the owners.Enjoyed the visit and seeing the cars there, if my wife had not been with me would have spent much more time, but she was more interested in a cup of tea in the cafe.
Probably saw more Turner cars today than the 38 years that I have lived in Wolverhampton, very interesting and thanks to the owners there for their time.

CommentsI was friends with the owner of 60/418 during the early 70's. The car was built by Clive Mace, in his lounge room, on completion he realized the French doors where slightly to narrow to fit the car so the doors had to be ripped out to give the extra clearance to fit the car. He had also had in mind early in the build entering the car in the London to Sydney marathon. He immigrated to Australia in the early 70's taking the car with him. After a few years he returned to the UK the car remained in Australia.

CommentsTurner Climax 4142 HJ.
I read with interest the entry from Robert Hutchinson regarding MY old car. I bought the car from a friend of mine who owned Northern Sportscars in Scorton near Croft. At the time it was RED. I then fitted a hardtop (kindly bought by my then girlfriend) which was DARK BLUE. I made up full perspex sidescreens and sold on the original sprite-type sidescreens. It was in this form that I ran it for some time. After an offside front crash, I rebuilt that corner and resprayed the car METALLIC BLUE and the hardtop METALLIC GREY. It was in these colours when I sold it somr time later to an Alan Green who I had served my apprenticeship with at the local ICI. chemical works. I am afraid that Robert has his wires crossed. If he would mail me, I would be very interested to hear from him. Is it Robert who lved in the Normanby/Eston area?

CommentsRe 4142HJ I bought this car in 1965,
I believe from a Mr Watson, as 2nd owner. It was red, I painted it Jaguar metallic blue. The engine had sports cams and I believe the output to have been 95bhp. At that time the other Watson car was owned by his brother. I sold it in about 66/67 to a man in North Yorks and never saw it again. At that time there was another Turner locally in either Redcar or Saltburn with a highly tuned sprite engine. I have no photos unfortunately or any other info.
Best Regards,
Rob

CommentsHI, I'm looking for a Turner to replace my Tornado Talisman which I am selling after going on 30 years ownership. My car was part of Team Turner back in 1982 at the 6 hour relay at Silverstone when I had to do a 2 hourt stint to keep the team going while all the Turners were being repaired! I just feel that having owned Rochdales, Fairthorpes and Tornado's, it's time to experience the final "quality' kit car of the 60's ythat is part of our club - FSCC. Look forward to hearing from you, even if it is just to say you remember my car - bright red - 4806 PK.

CommentsRegarding 66PPA, I'm pretty sure this is the car I owned about 1970. Found pretty derelict in a garden with engine half stripped and much other bits falling off. Managed to get it mobile again, but I was only 20 then and didn't see the value. Foolishly sold it, but would be very interested in knowing its state and whereabouts if any one stll has it.
Good site, wish I had found it sooner.

CommentsCongratulations on a really super web site - it has everything one could wish for!
I used to own BMC 950 Chassis N° 60/389 in the late 60s when it had the registration N° MT120, but after I sold her, somewhere along the line an owner changed the registration to 594 GNV - shame, but I suppose he/she cashed in on the obvious value - since 1980 MT 120 (alias 594 GNV) has disappeared off the Register - again shame!
I used to use her for what she was modified for - Sprints/Hill Climbs and was a wonderful road car aswell.
Since being in contact with Russ and other Turner owners, I've now got the "bug" to re-own a Turner!
I live in France, 15mins drive from the Le Mans 24H Circuit, where I've been installed since 1986.
Currently own a very nice 1965 MkI Spitfire in very original condition, which infact I bought whilst I lived in Germany (1976-86) from an Englishman who was short of the ready! So she has been registered in 3 countries!
If any one out there is thinking about selling their Turner I could be interested in having details of model/year etc and a colour photo by email (keep it to 72/100 pixels small format as I do not and can not have Broadband/ADSL in France - too far in the sticks!
Any car offered must be in good condition and ready to drive as I am past the age of crawling underneath until the early hours - however much I am "in love" with my car!
Again sensible/realistic price please.
History/Engine/GBox/ etc.
Thank you
All emails will be replied to.
Thanks
John Curtis

CommentsGreat Turner site!Enjoyed it a lot.
I am an old 950cc Turner owner, Reg 39CBC.sold to me in 1961 by that great 'Turner man' Gordon Unsworth of Derby and 'Tatty Turner' fame.
39 CBC was a twin to Tatty Turner, built at the same time and sprayed in the same emerald green colour, with silver hard top.
Would love to know of it's whereabouts.

CommentsI owned two 950 BMC tuners in UK in the mid/late sixties. One was a fairly standard car Reg No. XRY 349 (regret I do not know chassis no). It was white when purchased (Croydon area? in 1965) but I repainted it metallic light blue (jaguar) colour. It also had a hardtop fitted. I sold it in '69 or '70 to someone from the Stroud (Glos) area. It is not listed in your Reg No. listings.

The other car I had (also 950 BMC A series)Reg No. 934 BUF was ex Ian Raby racing and very highly tuned also fitted with a close ratio gearbox. I found this car semi-derelict in Bristol in 1967 and rebuilt it though fitted 15" wire wheels (which I had available) rather than the 13" which had been originally fitted. I also fitted a hard top. The car was red (with black bonnet)and was very fast. I sold it to a Doctor friend of mine who later sold it on to a mutual friend who, I believe, had a big accident and wrote it off.

I wonder if anyone has any further history of either of these cars?

CommentsAs the previous owner of what is now known as 004A,I would like to say how pleased I am at the job John Kenyon has done on it. I owned it from the 1970's and stored it, ready for when I retired but has we all now things change and my health meant it was not to be. The car was never for sale until john turned up in his original A30 Sports model Turner in an unfussed with condition, I took too him and showed him what was hidden in my barn, stating it wasn't for sale!! John was determined tho' and after protracted discussions in the sunshine seated in the back garden a "deal" was struck. I am so pleased with the dedication John has shown in restoring the car and his fastidious research into it's past. I do not regret passing it on to John as I know it will now never "die" and will be a Momento to the time when the "Brits" would have a go at anything in the name of sport. He has promised me a go in it and I look forward to that day.I first saw the finished car at Holsworthy show,Devon and was amazed at the job john had done. I felt so proud of it and of john for all the work he had done over the 2 1/2 years since the care of 004A passed to his more than capable hands. Again John, thanks for bringing a piece of English motoring history back to life! Yours faithfully Keith..

CommentsI recently returned from the 2001 Turner Reunion at Mosport where a total of 13 Turners appeared. Of particular interest was seeing the road registered Turners of Jim Bollinger, Mark Wheatley and Dave Lewis. My 1959 Mk1 BMC A (60/304) ran well throughout the entire weekend once we replaced the exhaust pipe that fell off! An absolutely fabulous gathering of Turners and I enjoyed meeting many of the people whose names I have seen on this site. Now we have to see if we can get even more Turners to Lime Rock in September 2002 at the reunion being organized by Steve Agins!

CommentsI have owned 61-447, a Mk II FWE 1216 Climax powered Turner since 1971. It was one of eight Turners imported by Oscar Motors in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Oscar brought in three Climax models and five 950's. I have no idea of what happened to the other Turners. I did meet a fellow at one of the Alberta All British Field Meets a number of years ago who owned one of the 950's. He told me he had traded it for a MGB in Calgary, Alberta and then never saw it again. My Turner was bought by a fellow called Rick Mark who had raced the car from new. He then sold it to Ray St Arnaud, who also raced it. I am the third owner. I raced the car at Edmonton International Speedway (EIS) in 1971, in Class D. That year ESI hosted the CanAm, TransAm and Continental Formula A and B races. I came second in Class D for the Prairie Region, mainly because I was able to run all the events. Glad to see this site. I read about it in Dave Scotts column in the Faithorpe Sport Car Club newsletter. I am going to see if I can make it to Mosport for the reunion, as I have never seen another Turner. Comments1959 Turner S 948cc bmc engine with an Alexander crossflow head. Car has been completely restored from the frame up w/ 13" wire wheels. Engine has been rebuilt by professional engine rebuilder Jerry Mong of the Bobsy Car Builder in Medina, OH. Car has been prepared for SVRC Antique Car Racing, but, sadly, I am too old to race anymore (and my family won't let me) believe me when I say that this car is the finest, the fastest & best handling 1959 Turner you'll ever find.

CommentsI was fascinated to see mentioned the current life of 60/295. I knew this car well many years ago in England. This car was bought by a friend of mine Dick Falk while he was living in Bromley Kent about 200yds away from where I was living as a student Dick hill climbed 60/295 at Prescott and I was there at the time. It was as a result of this car that I myself became a Turner owner as I bought Dick's previous car off him , a Mk 1 950cc BMC for 110pounds(he had only paid 95pounds). I then sold this car to my brother for 125pounds! My Mark 1 unfortunately broke its rear suspension as Iwas preparing to go to Scotland and Dick kindly allowed me to borrow 60/295. This was then driven to Scotland and reached John-O-Groats and back to London. This would be in 1970/71. I subsequently replaced my BMC engined Turner with a Climax engined one 60/373 which I brought back to NZ when I emigrated there in 1976. I have been rebuilding it since 1980 It went back on the road on its 40th birthday 1st August 2000.

CommentsNice to see the note from my former co-owner Jeff Schur. We had great fun running the car in the VSCCA and SVRA at tracks including Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, Road America, Mid Ohio and Mosport to name a few. However, my move to Iowa while Jeff was in the NYC arrea forced the disillition of the partnership shortly after the unfortunate incident at Watkins Glen in 1999. The car has been totally and magnificantly re-restored by Brian and Maura MacEachern of Columbus Ohio, and the 1098cc FWA pulls just short of 100bhp on the dyno at only 7000 RPMs with power and torque still climbing (98.6bhp/68.3ft.lbs). Of interest, the engine numbers match the chasis plate, which is a rarity in a race car of this vintage. If you would be interested, I can provide photos of the car in both VSCCA ("15 inch wires) and SVRA (13" mags). The car was featured on the SVRA poster for the 2000 Sprint Vintage Grand Prix at Mid Ohio. Additionally, I have a sales brochure from Detroit Auto & Imports in Smith Creek Michigan for the Turner 950. Where should I send items of interest for inclusion on this outstanding website?

CommentsDennis wonderful job! I just came across your site accidentally but what a nice surprise. I owner a Mark III Sprint Speciale. These cars were built for the US market only and were advertised to have a number of high performance parts. These included an oil cooler, twin Weber DCOE carbs, special comp. cam and rocker assembly, balanced internal engine components, comp. valve springs, close ratio gears, balanced drive shaft, limited slip diff, hardened HD axles, comp. anti-roll bar and safety roll bar. The advertisement I have from Ferguson Automotive Imports lists it a 132 bhp, 0 to 60 in 6.5 secs. I think they might be a little optimistic. I most unusual part of the "Speciale's" were that they were all right hand drive so the side draft Webers would not interfere with the steering shaft. According to Dave Scott the factory records only show 11 rhd Mark III's being sent to the US so I would assume its one of eleven at the most. Has anyone ever tracked down someone who was affiliated with Ferguson Automotive? The car has been in the Akron/Canton Ohio area since new and may have been delivered by Tri-City motors which was located about 3 miles from where I live. Once I get my scanner connected I'll send some pictures for your photo section. Please keep up the good work!

CommentsI've owned and autocrossed my MK III since 1969 and it's a hoot. I've got a stock 1600x flow, center lock minilites and a limited slip in it and the setup has not changed essentially in all these years. The classes have though. For two articles I wrote on Turners (Autoweek and British Car) I visited with Jack Turner and his wife in Wales. He is the last of the auto entepreneurs of his generation--- the people who built what I call the Heinz 57 class of cars with a spicy mixture of goodies borrowed (mostly) from the Austin parts bin. Dennis has done a fabulous job on this site and it gets me to thinking that Turner owneres should try for some kind of gathering--perhaps at the Lime Rock Fall Vintage Festival in September of 2001. I'd be willing to try and organize this with the people at Lime Rock if there is enough interest. Some years ago there were 9 Turners present at that event. If you consider that Jack made 678 of the 2-seaters, and about half came to the US, and the last of the new cars got here in 1965, that's pretty astonishing. Not many people know that Lime Rock owner Skip Barber once raced a Turner in SCCA competition. (there's a lot more trivia in my articles which are being sent to Dennis for inclusion in the web site)

Comments was happy to find this site, Iam doing a ground up restoration on 30-183, 1959 950s. I didn't know what I was buying but I knew it was special! It had been stripped and left outside for years,(Indiana,US, the rust belt) the floor pan was gone, and there wasn't any engine, but everything else was there. I have the original Title, the owner was Gerald R. Walker From Peoria Illinois,It was sold to him new in 1964 and first titled in 1968? The Brookland windscreen has Turner #85 etched on it, it has Thorpe aluminium knockoffs an Good year blue streaks, and it has 11,480 miles on the speedo. Ive replaced all the rotten metal and have a 65 MG 1098 installed. I plan on having it ready for 2001, an I'am considering vintage racing it. finding info on Turners is tough in the states and this site has given me hope. I would appreciate any help I could get.

CommentsDennis, You've done a wonderful job on the website! We Turner fans really appreciate your great efforts. And thanks also to those Turner owners who have submitted photos of their cars. (Now if I can only get from the U.S. to the Turner Rally in the next year or two.)

CommentsI own and race a FWA powered Mark I. The car is quite competitive in the VSCCA in the under 2 liter class. My "Crew Chief" also owns a Turner (950S)

CommentsHi
What happened to the old style guest-book.
I don't think much of this format.
Regards Keith.
