I prefer to ride out in the road, about where the right tire of a car rides. Two reasons: better visibility to cars. Make sure I don't get squeezed by fast passing cars in both directions. I wear a mirror and get over when a car begins to pass. I also wave cars around when I can see it is clear and hold out my hand in a stop position when I can see a car coming in the other direction and the cars behind me cannot.
