They started out in Punxsutawney, and I'm guessing they moved to Sagamore on the early end of the coal boom there, either when the mine opened or the railroad went through. I really miss that place. I lived in Sagamore from 1988-2006 just recently moved. I didnt want to leave but had many in home problems. I miss everything about it. | Comments | The town of Sagamore brings back many fond memories. Back around 1955 a family my the name of Edwin and Gwen Higgins moved in our neighborhead. The had two children, a son named Edwin Jr. and a daughter whom I've forgoten her name. Edwin Jr. was my age and we became close friends. I traveled to Pa. in the summer with Jr. and his father to fish for trout. We would stop in Sagamore on our way and always go to the hotel and tavern so that Edwin's father could see his friends. I remember visiting a friend of Edwin Sr. by the name of Joe Burnakis. I may have spelled his name wrong but it sounded as I've spelled it. Also while at the hotel I asked if a pay phone was available and was told I had to go to a drugstore in Rural Valley. I remember going there and was not able to operate a phone in a woden box hanging on the wass with a crank on it's side. That type of phone I had never used. Edwin Jr. was killed in an automobile accident around 1961 or 1962 while serving in the Army and stationed in Germany. He is burried in Sagamore or very close to it. His parents are deceased and after his sister married I lost track of her. Any information about that family would be appreciated. Thanks of bringing back some of my early childhood fond memories. |

| Comments | This is a great site to find and view. Both sides of my family come from this area and my wifes also. My paternal grandparents Curtis & Pearl Aul are buried at Atwood. My maternal grandfather William Oscar Hayes was born in Rural Valley. So as a child we went thru Sagamore many times a year to visit relatives like John & Bertha McCausland of Sagamore. I've never been in the old hotel but knew it as a landmark that will surely be missed by many. The photos are great and explain a lot of how the town once looked. |

| Comments | My mother was born and raised in Sagamore. My grandfather and grandmother were Amos and Annie Harkleroad. They lived on 5th st. Amos was a miner until his health failed. My mother had 9 brothers and sisters, 4 of whom died in early childhood. Amos died at the age of 39 or 40 in 1941 or so leaving a rather large family for Annie to take care of by herself. My mother, Erma, was only 12 but she had to step forward and help out. I have a lot of admiration for all of the people who lived in Sagamore at that time as mining was not an easy living. I especially admire my mother and grandmother for somehow managing without Amos. My uncle Glen Wingard and his family also lived in Sagamore. I think they lived there in the late fifties/early sixties but I don't know on what street. The loss of the hotel is quite dismaying; it was quite a landmark. It certainly won't be the same when I drive by in the future. Love the pictures and the snapshot of history that they provide. |

I have mixed feelings about Sagamore. The saddest, of course, was watching my father when he was so sick and losing him. | Comments | I actually stumbled on this website doing a random search on google.com and I was very impressed! I moved to Sagamore whenever I was eight years old,and I have lived most of my life there. In fact, to-date, my family has basically monopolized the entire sector of fourth and fifth streets and my great grandparents and uncles can be found throughout the rest of the town. It's definitely a tight community that has endeared itself very closely to my heart. It's nice to see somebody establish a site to educate people about its history and the nostalgia that made it such an influential town. Unfortunately, Sagamore Hotel was lost to a recent fire, but fortunately, current tenants and locals who live nearby all escaped without any physical harm. It is a shame to lose such a great landmark, but like other great historical facets that have come and gone in Sagamore, as long as it remains in the memory, it will always endure. Here's to my best wishes that the "little town" of Sagamore always endures, that its people always find the prosperity that comes with inner-peace, and that the memories which make the town so unique continue to pass down from generation to generation. It's place in history is too often overlooked, and this site is a refreshing reminder to all in that regard and a great cause! |

| Comments | I love the website. I grew up in Sagamore from 1971-1991 then I got married and moved to Rural Valley. But Sagamore has and will always be home to me. Most of my family still live there. Drove by the old hotel today 08/24/05 to see the remains and I just started to cry. I can't believe that it is gone. My mother and grandmother bartended there and I pretty much grew up in the hotel. I hope Aaron can but something up there . Maybe if he does people can send old photos like the ones on this site as a rememberance. Life was always wonderful in Sagamore. It always got a bad rap but if you were every in need, you could always count on the town to come together and help. Great stories come from Sagamore. I remember them all. Both my parents families moved to Sagamore when my parents were young, I can remember my mother's uncle John "Joke" Miller telling me all kinds of stories. Like walking around town at night before there were street lights, how spooky it was, as he walked he felt like someone was walking behind him. It really would have been something to have lived in Sagamoe so many years ago. It really must have been quite the place with it's numerous stores, schools, ball fieds, Dr's office, movie theatre, etc. I will always remember as a boy listening to the stories about Sagamore from Oscar "Cash" Issacson. | Comments | Alright! Glad to see a site on Sagamore. I was always hopeful somebody would take the initiative and develop a site such as yours. There is so much history that needs preserved and with each passing year more of it will be forever lost unless someone like yourself does something about it now!! If I were you, I would print up some flyers announcing your intentions and put the flyers on the bulletin boards at the local post offices, and maybe find some students to pass them out at their schools so other students would to take home to their parents. Surely there are families with old pictures and information they would be willing to share for such a great endeavor! It could end up being a unified effort by all the local communiteis, for the sake of a memorial to the long ago almost forgotten miners in the area, if for no other reason, I think that may generate some interest! Won't hurt to try. |
