"The Italian Anomaly: Silvio Berlusconi and media control in Italy."
A presentation ( in English ) and discussion by Anna Battista, an Italian journalist working and living in Glasgow.
Silvio Berlusconi is the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, the richest man in the country, the owner of a publishing empire and three private TV channels. As Prime Minister, he also retains the power to exercise a remarkable influence over RAI, the Italian public TV station. There are other strong media conglomerations in many countries all over the world, but the combination of media and political power represented by ‘Il Cavaliere ‘is a unique case, often described as "the Italian anomaly". The talk will briefly introduce the figure of Silvio Berlusconi and analyse issues such as media pluralism and political censorship in Italy.

A special civic reception was held in Glasgow complete with a mass conducted by Archbishop Mario Conti to commemorate more than 100 years of Italians in Scotland.
Following this celebratory day, www.scotsitalian.com was mentioned on a Radio Scotland article discussing the possibility of having a national Scots-Italian Day. See the La Festa webpage for details.

At the last 2 meetings at the CCA we have had a poor turnout, only 2 in September and 2 again in October.
Before organising November's programme we need to make a decision on whether or not to continue with this event.
These events are organised for everyone who wants to come along and it would be a pity to suspend or cancel it.
So, before sending you all the November programme can I please ask all those interested in continuing with this event to get in touch with me.
reminder! - film Thursday 28th October - Le fate ignoranti
regards
saluti

SCOTS-ITALIAN TARTAN
(Exert from Sunday Times 5th Sept)
Scotia Nostra Wrapped in Tartan
There has been a substantial Italian community in Scotland for well over
100 years - quite apart from earlier immigrants such as David Rizzio,
the secretary of Mary Queen of Scots who was savagely murdered by
Scottish nobles in front of the monarch in 1566. There are now estimated
to be about 50,000 Scots of Italian extraction and while many are still
in the catering trade with restaurants, ice-cream parlours and fish and
chip shops, many have become involved in the arts. Sir Eduardo Paolozzi
(born in Leith) is an international sculptor and artist and Richard de
Marco is a major art impresario in Scotland. But until now they have not
had a tartan to call their own. That has now changed, with the approval
of a design incorporating the colours of the Italian national flag which
has been registered with the Scottish Tartans Authority. The project has
been pushed forward (with support from the Italian consulate in
Edinburgh) by a fish and chip shop owner who is a third generation
Scottish-Italian, whose family moved from Tuscany in 1890. Michael
Lenetti plans to give all the players in the AC Milan team (and Silvio
Berlusconi the Italian Prime Minister and owner of the football team) an
Italian tartan scarf when they come to Glasgow to play Celtic in the
Champions League.

Cari amici,
The Italina playwright Renato Gabrielli is coming to Glasgow in April for a production of his theatrical monologues [translated into English] at the Tron Theatre. Renato is also an actor and has very kindly agreed to give a performance in Italian of one of the monologues especially for our group. This will be followed by a discussion.
The monologue he will read is called "Qualcosa Trilla" and I think it is brilliant. i have a copy of the script in Italian. If anyone would like to read it before the evetn please get in touch with me by e-mail. [It's only nine pages]
The production in English is only about an hour long, so the reading of "Qualcosa Trilla" should be about twenty minutes or so.
Here is an extract from the press release:
"DEATH AND THE CITY"
A TRILOGY BY RENATO GABRIELLI
Translated by Maggie Rose:
Directed by Carrie Cracknell
Produced and sound designed by James Erskine
"Three stunning monologues will take you on a trip thorugh a Milan you've never imagined in your wildest dreams. Hush Prouductions present the world English language premiere of "Death and the City" by Renato Gabriella, dealing with human fantasy, suicide and the trials of urban existence. Gabrielle's writing is in turn poetic and beguiling, at times sinister but also contains an extraordinary surreal humour. A powerful collaboration between the renowned Milanse playwrited and Hush Productions promises to be al elctric event."
"Hush positively screams originality and invention ... visual artistry that just has to be seen."
The Scotsman:
15th-17th April: Tron Theatre, Chanign House, Glasgow.
7.30 pm. Tickets £5/£8
THE READING IN ITALIAN WILL BE ON THURSDAY 15TH, AFTER THE SHOW.
I hope as many as possible can come along, briinging friends, family, anoyne with a love of the Italian language and/or interest in modern Italian theatre.
Best wishes,
