CommentsMy Great great grandmother, Rebecca Brister, was born at the 1st Somerset Militia Army Camp near Upwey in 1806, with twin sister Elizabeth whilst their father, Edwin, was stationed there with her mother Ann. The baptism of the twins is recorded in both the registers of Upwey and Broadwey churches.

We want to set up a data base on all such references.<br>What we are really trying to prove is that you in Dorset started the American Revolution!<br><br>Now that I have your attention, please help us find whether a bit of oral history is true, to wit: that<br>William Bucklin came from the Weymouth area. A direct descendent of William Bucklin, aka<br>Buckland, named Joseph Bucklin, fired the shot which is celebrated annually in Rhode Island as the<br>first shot in the American Revolution.<br><br>William was born about 1609, married Mary Bosworth in England, and came to America with the<br>Winthrop fleet in 1630. The oral history about William Bucklin has been proved true in various<br>particulars, except for one item which remains unproven. That item has to do with the place from<br>which William left for the American colony. The theory is that he came from the Weymouth area? <br><br>The oral tradition, established at least before 1850 was that : "William Bucklin came from Wey<br>[sic], England, where he was a shipwright. Wey was at the mouth of the Wey river. There was a <br>plot of Bucklin graves by the church at " Wey", with a large central shaft among the Bucklin family<br>graves." <br><br>"Wey" is a place name not known generally today, so there often is a tendency of researchers today<br>to assume that "Wey" is a mistaken or shortened form of "Weymouth", England. However, we undersand that next to the present town of Weymouth is Radipole. In Roman times, the tidal basin of the river Wey furnished a harbor there. Probably for several centuries, until the harbor moved southward, Radipole was at the mouth of the river Wey, and it was known as Wey. It would be a place where ships were built.<br><br>Indeed there is a church with graves in Radipole (Wey). The church at Radipole (Wey) does in fact have a large central shaft in the raveyard. Although the shaft has Lethbridge as the main name, the Lethbridge and Buckler families were connected and there is in the graveyard a tomb for<br>a family named Buckler.<br><br>Quere to Englishpersons: Are "Bucklin" and "Buckler" possible variations of "Buckland"? If so,<br>the oral history is consistent with the Radipole cemetery as the "Wey" burial place of the ancestors<br>of William Bucklin.<br><br>Radipole is about 1 mile across the fields from Buckland Ripers. (Interesting that the Buckland<br>name is associated with this Wey area.) At Radipole is a house, known as the "Causeway House"<br>at a bridge over the Wey, at what would in previous centuries been at the tidal basin, a logical<br>place for a shipwright to live. The Causeway House is associated with the "Buckler" name. If <br>Bucklin and Buckler are early variations of "Buckland", the oral tradition of William Bucklin being<br>a shipwright out of Wey is again consistent with facts now known.<br><br>Also, there is no logical reason for an oral historian to associate William as coming from "Wey",<br>instead of with Weymouth, except a good oral history passed through generations, inasmuch as<br>the ships of the Winthrope fleet did not sail from Weymouth (rather from London), but did have<br>persons who were exposed to the powerful influence of supporters in the Weymouth area of<br>England of the Winthrope movement for movement because of religious reasons. <br><br>The Causeway House is noted in the registers of St. Annes Church as having several persons "out<br>of the house of Andrew Buckler...dying of ye plage" in 1563. The family of the Causeway House apparently was substantial, and had one member as a Privy Counselor at the court of Elizabeth I.<br><br>William Bucklin, when he arrived in America, appeared to have substantial cash, but not being of<br>the rank of gentleman–again consistent with the Buckler family Radipole.<br><br>So far, the only William Bucklin (Buckland) we have found in the appropriate time period is a<br>William Buckland born to a John Buckland shown in a birth record at Clyst St. George, Devon,<br>England.<br><br>So to the point: is there any written record of a Bucklin in Dorset in the time frame of<br>1590 to 1640? Or is there any record of a Bucklin family (or the name variations) in that time<br>period in Dorset?</td></tr> <tr valign=top><td><b>How did you find us?</b></td><td>internet surfing</td></tr> </table></center> <hr width="75%"><center><table cellpadding=5 cellspacing=0 border=0 width="70%"> <tr valign=top><td><b>Name</b></td><td>David</td></tr> <tr valign=top><td><b>Email</b></td><td><a href="mailto:Webmaster@TimeTeamLinks.co.uk">Webmaster@TimeTeamLinks.co.uk</a></td></tr> <tr valign=top><td><b>Comments</b></td><td>Looking for Time Team Links to add to my Website www.TimeTeamLinks.co.uk<br>Will the Time Team Page on your website be updated?</td></tr> <tr valign=top><td><b>How did you find us?</b></td><td>Via a search in Google</td></tr> </table></center> <hr width="75%"><center><table cellpadding=5 cellspacing=0 border=0 width="70%"> <tr valign=top><td><b>Name</b></td><td>Lynda Palmer</td></tr> <tr valign=top><td><b>Email</b></td><td><a href="mailto:Rhiannon_10@hotmail.com">Rhiannon_10@hotmail.com</a></td></tr> <tr valign=top><td><b>Comments</b></td><td>Looking for friend to write to in Upwey. <br>I would like to learn as much as possible. I will be visiting Upwey in May, and am anxious to visit the area my ancestors came from in the 1600's. I would like to know if the Mill House on Mill St is still standing? There is also supposed to be a Sprague Wishing Well in Upwey, and that church bells were given to an area church by the Sprague's in the 1600's. Do you have any information about these landmarks that you could share with me? <br><br>I will really appreciate any information that you can either E-mail or mail to me.
