DH was like that. Me having a dog and a cat when we got together was almost a deal breaker till he saw you can have pets without the mess and stink. He didn't believe that cats could be trained to stay off counters and cabinets so he set up a security camera to try to catch my cat in the act. Never did because he simply was trained properly.
This person(s) really do remind me of DH and his narrow minded view of pets because of what he had to grow up in/with.
